The team of midwives provide care to mothers in the unit with the help of two midwifery assistants. The midwives also work in the community providing all midwifery care to mothers over a rural area of 950 square miles. A dual qualified nurse/midwife works in the Community Hospital at night. Women who have had straight forward pregnancies can give birth in the unit, which is 26 miles from the consultant unit in Exeter. Mothers who have given birth in Exeter can transfer to Okehampton for postnatal stay. This midwife-led unit has 3 en-suite single postnatal rooms and a birth room with a pool. You will be invited to have 2 ultrasound scans in Exeter. The first one will take place when you're 12 weeks pregnant. You'll have a second one when you are 18-22 weeks pregnant to check on the progess of your baby. If you decide to breastfeed, a midwife will assist you for as long as you need help.
