Nottingham High Junior School
At Nottingham High Junior School we believe that for education to be successful it must be fun. We want your son to be impatient to get to school every morning and tired and happy when he gets home.
We believe that the most precious gift of education is the discovery of self, and that this is achieved equally through academic work, sport, adventure, creativity and learning to live and work with others. Warmth, kindness, courtesy and the utmost respect for others are qualities that are demonstrated and expected in equal measure here.
Ours is a boys-only school. Our teachers know boys and understand that they learn differently from girls. The curriculum is tailored accordingly, with shorter lessons, plenty of hands-on activities and plenty of sport and games. Our facilities are geared towards meeting boys’ needs, too. Just as importantly our teachers are expert in supporting boys with tact and kindness, helping them to make sense of their emotions, and develop self-esteem through healthy competition and the achievement of measurable success.
Sport plays a much talked-about role in the life of our school. We play sport for the sheer enjoyment of it and encourage boys of all abilities to compete at the level which is right for them. Our main sports are cricket, football and rugby; there’s a wide range of other sports, too, including swimming, cross-country and athletics.
Music, art and drama are also highly valued here. Many boys play a musical instrument and sing in the choir, and there are regular opportunities to perform in a range of drama and musical productions, often alongside pupils from neighbouring Nottingham Girls’ High School.
And the result? A relaxed, affectionate community, free from social distractions, where boys can be boys and have fun because they know exactly what is expected of them and exactly where their boundaries are.
