The Wildfowl and Wetlands Conservation Charity is the largest international charity of its kind, founded originally in 1946 by naturalist Sir Peter Scott. The Martin Mere Centre is divided into two parts. There is a large collection of birds from all over the world such as ducks, geese, flamingoes (including flamingo chicks) within a garden setting amongst which you are free to walk about and feed either from your hand or on the ground in front of you The second part which is a large area of ex-farmland, has been developed into marshes and shallow waters as natural habitats for the nesting migratory and home wildfowl. Here you find waders, herons and other predator birds as well. The Visitor Centre has baby-changing facilities, a café with high chairs, there are picnic areas and hard-surface paths for pushchairs and there are lots of activities for children such as crafts, modelling, family packs, colouring etc. Open all year from 9.30 to 5.30pm (or 5pm in the winter).
We strongly recommend you ring Martin Mere Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Martin Mere Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre, www.wwt.org.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Martin Mere Wildfowl and Wetlands Centre hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
