Bolton Street Station, Bury, Greater Manchester
Originally built in 1846 to link the Manchester to Bolton line with Radcliffe, it was nearly closed down in 1972 but has been restored to its former glory and was re-opened in 1991. There are various steam and diesel trains running from May to September from Wednesday to Friday (approximately four trains a day), specifically from Bury to Rawtenstall, where there is a lovely park at Ramsbottom, half way along the journey. Families can stop here for picnics, walks etc. Various special events during the year, include kids craft workshop, Halloween ghost trains, Thomas days out in October and Santa specials in December.
We strongly recommend you ring East Lancashire Railway before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for East Lancashire Railway, www.east-lancs-rly.co.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if East Lancashire Railway hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
