Old Hill, Chislehurst, Kent

The Chislehurst caves are a huge network of man-made mines, which date back as far as 1250. It is believed that, over the centuries, the Druids, the Romans, and the Saxons have mined here, and it is reputedly haunted. During the second World War, the caves were used as an air-raid shelter for over 15,00 people and were fitted with a hospital and a chapel. Later, in the 1960s the caves became a popular music venue, and featured performances from a host of celebrated musicians, including David Bowie and The Rolling Stones.

Due to the vast size of the caves, visitors may only see them by a guided tour. As you'd expect, the caves are very dark and each family will be provided with an oil lamp as torches are too blinding in total darkness. The terrain can be fairly rough and uneven, and would be difficult with a pushchair. It is suggested that the caves are suitable for children ages 3 and up, however it is largely dependent on the sensibility of the child. Tours run every hour, on the hour, commencing at 10am. There is no need to book, simply turn up on the day. The tour last for approximately an hour, and visitors will be required to walk for about a mile. The caves are situated only a short walk from Chislehurst station and there is parking available on site.
