Blackheath Avenue, Greenwich Park, Greenwich, London
Sitting at the top of Greenwich Park are the Royal Observatory and Planetarium. A line in the ground in the courtyard of the Royal Observatory marks out where "east" and "west" of Greenwich Meantime starts, which is the official starting point for each new day and year. The buildings here show how time has been measured and how the science of the stars has shaped our view of the world and beyond.
Just behind the Observatory you'll find the Peter Harrison Planetarium (now the only planetarium in London), which has regular films about the universe of stars and planets. Planetarium shows are recommended for children aged 5yrs+ (under 5s free), whilst Space Safari shows are suitable for under 7yrs. There are regular weekend events including Explore Saturdays, Discover Sundays and Play Tuesdays (free music, dance and drama for under 5yrs). There are also special events put on to celebrate Diwali, Chinese New Year and Halloween - as well as an annual Pirate Party.
