Set in the heart of Stockport's historic market place, Staircase House is a Grade 2 listed medieval town house, believed to have been the Mayor of Stockport's house in the 1480s. The Shallcross family who lived there from early the 17th century to the mid 18th century gentrified the house and added the fabulous cage newel staircase in 1618 from which the house is named. Purposefully few rope barriers or signs preventing you from touching, feeling and breathing the way people lived and how society and attitudes changed, providing hands-on experience for children and adults alike, walking through six centuries of living, in the house. Children are provided with a satchel containing a family activity sheet, so that children can do colouring, drawing and finding different objects in each room. Good access for pushchairs, and the audio tour can be tailored accordingly so that mums use the lifts instead of having to negotiate stairs. Blackshaw's Café provides children's lunchboxes and there are baby-changing facilities. Open every day from 12 noon to 5pm (Sundays from 1pm), closed for Christmas, Boxing and New Year's Day.

We strongly recommend you ring Stairscase House before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. Please also be aware that if Stairscase House hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
