For a gentle day out especially in the early summer when the gardens are at their prettiest, Levens Hall is a fine Elizabethan House, ripe for exploration. There is a quiz sheet to interest children as they go around the house and as well as beautiful furniture and paintings, there is family memorabilia due to their connections with both 1st Duke of Wellington and Nelson. Outside you can spot some of the lovely old traction engines which make appearances from time to time in the courtyard adjacent to the Gift Shop or you can bring your own picnic and lose yourself in the gardens. The famous Topiary Gardens feature shapes designed over 300 years ago and continued to this day. The Bellingham Buttery has baby-changing facilities and would warm baby food as appropriate. Open from mid-April to mid-October, Sundays to Thursday from 10am (gardens) or 12 noon (house) to 5pm.
We strongly recommend you ring Levens Halls and Gardens before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Levens Halls and Gardens, www.levenshall.co.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Levens Halls and Gardens hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
