Carlisle, Cumbria
The first castle on this site (other than evidence of Roman forts) dates back to 1092 when it was constructed of earth and timber, after which it was refortified in stone during the 12th Century. Strategically placed on the busy Anglo-Scottish border, Carlisle Castle has a fascinating and well-documented history. Particularly fun for small boys with exhibitions covering the Romans, Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite rising, ramparts and cannons, and a military museum, the castle grounds are fun for all to run around in, there are picnic areas and benches, and a hot drinks machine and cold drinks cabinet (and food and bottles can be warmed up). Children can colour in pictures too and every couple of weeks, the best ones are displayed on a board. Baby-changing facilities are also available. Open daily in the summer from 9.30am to 5pm and in the winter (Oct to Mar) from 10am to 4pm, the castle is closed on Christmas and Boxing Days and on New Year
We strongly recommend you ring Carlisle Castle before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Carlisle Castle, www.carlislecastle.co.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Carlisle Castle hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
