Dunstanburgh Road, Craster, Alnwick, Northumberland
Set right on the coast, Dunstanburgh is one of England’s most dramatic ruins and the perfect venue for a beach and/or picnic day. Building commenced in the 13th century by Earl Thomas of Lancaster, at a time when relations between himself and King Edward II had become openly hostile. Owned by the National Trust but managed by English Heritage. There are picnic facilities but if you need the loo there’s no option but to cross your legs as there aren’t any!
We strongly recommend you ring Dunstanburgh Castle before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Dunstanburgh Castle, www.english-heritage.org.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket.
