Belsay, Northumberland
Vast gardens provide a magnificent setting for Belsay Castle and Hall – as well as for family picnics. The castle’s 14th century ‘peel tower’ is one of the best surviving examples in England and inside remain the traces of elaborate medieval wall-paintings. The Hall was added later, in the style of an austerely classical Greek revival villa, and is home to a contemporary art exhibition during the summer. There’s no adventure playground but they host occasional family activities. Tea rooms. Open all year; daily Apr-Oct, closed Tues-Wed Nov-March.
We strongly recommend you ring Belsay Castle before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Belsay Castle, www.english-heritage.org.uk, to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Belsay Castle hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
