Bourne Road, Colchester, Essex
The mill was originally built as a fishing lodge in 1591 and features stepped 'Dutch' gables. It was converted in the 19th century to a mill for fulling (a process in cloth manufacture) and later flour milling. It has a working waterwheel and makes a fun and interesting place for a picnic on a sunny day. Free parking, buggy friendly and baby back carriers are admitted. Note that there are no toilet facilities. Open Tuesdays, Sundays and bank holiday Mondays 2pm-5pm.
We strongly recommend you ring Bourne Mill before you set off on your family day out, to make sure they are open and to confirm admission prices. It may also be worth visiting the website for Bourne Mill to see if there are any special events on the day for which you may have to book a ticket. Please also be aware that if Bourne Mill hosts birthday parties, this may limit the access in the cafe/restaurant areas.
